Kay Worsham

Kay Worsham became interested in basket weaving more than ten years ago while teaching at Chattooga High School where she was introduced to the art of weaving by a colleague. She honed her skills by taking a class at John C. Campbell Folk School in North Carolina and attended the Arrowmont School of Arts & Crafts in Tennessee.

Baskets can be woven from many materials but I weave mostly from reed and cane.  A simple basket can take approximately four hours to complete with larger more difficult styles taking up to sixteen hours.  There are about twelve steps to completing a basket whether if is large or small.  When the basket if finished there is a decision of whether to dye.  Some materials can be purchases colored but are more expensive.  One of my most beautiful baskets was dyed by boiling whole walnuts and using the water as a stain.
